Proactive Action for Session One
1. You must know exactly how many cigarettes you smoke per day.

2. Start counting from the first one you smoke to the last one.

3. From now on each cigarette that you smoke has a number on it.

4. You must be aware of each cigarette's number.

5. From now on, before you smoke a cigarette take a brief moment for quiet contemplation. Just quietly acknowledge the number of the cigarette before you light it up.

6. Remember that you smoke for only one main reason. Your brain commands you to supply nicotine and you obey. You are addicted to nicotine and this is the reason why you smoke. Remember - the tobacco industry has developed cigarettes that contain no nicotine. These cigarettes are significantly less harmful, but nobody wants to smoke them. You also wouldn't smoke a nicotine-free cigarette. People smoke to bring nicotine to the brain, so acknowledge that when you light up.

7. For the moment, keep on obeying addiction 's command: light them up. Slyly, though, start working on the conspiracy. Remember that we are planning a 'coup d' état' and sending the nicotine addiction to the guillotine. With this thought in mind, put a small smile on your face as you light up each cigarette.

8. Give your addiction what it wants, yet from now on don't do it absentmindedly.

9. Awareness is very difficult to maintain. Mark your pack every morning so that even if you lose track of counting, you will know how many cigarettes you have smoked each day.

10. As the conspiracy gets underway, your addiction will sense danger. Remember that it will act as an entity that is separate to you, and realize that it will take counter-action. Your task for now is to maintain awareness by contemplating for a moment before each cigarette to acknowledge its number and our conspiracy. Don't let your mind distract you. It will try hard, but stand guard!
